Gabriele Schnaut

„Gabriele Schnaut sings with passionate frenzy that makes occasional moments of introspection doubly affecting.” Die Frau ohne Schatten (Färberin) Financial Times New York 2001

„You can’t perform „Turandot“ without a vocally credible Turandot. In the German dramatic soprano Gabriele Schnaut, Lyric has found a singer who really delivers the vocal goods in this diva-devouring role. Schnaut, who was making her house debut, commands a big, shining sound that penetrated Puccini´s rich orchestral textures with ease.” Turandot (Titelpartie) Chicago Tribune

„And then we have a phenomenal singer like Gabriele Schnaut for the part of Elektra: a singer whose sheer presence casts a spell on the audience and whose exorbitantly radiant voice opens up chasms in your soul you never knew existed.” Elektra (title part) Bayerische Staatszeitung Munich

The singer from Mannheim counts herself among today’s most renowned soprano singers in high drama. Gabriele Schnaut graduated with distinction from the College of Music in Frankfurt and entered upon her first permanent engagement as a lyrical mezzo-soprano at the STAATSOPER STUTTGART in 1976. This period was followed by further permanent engagements at the STAATSTHEATER DARMSTADT, NATIONALTHEATER MANNHEIM and at the DEUTSCHE OPER AM RHEIN DÜSSELDORF. In 1985, she switched to soprano roles and has been working freelance since 1991.

She soon built up a busy international career, which regularly led her to the following opera houses and festivals: TEATRO ALLA SCALA DI MILANO: Elektra (title part); Die Walküre (Brünnhilde) with opening of the season; BAYREUTH FESTIVAL: Ring der Nibelungen (Brünnhilde), Lohengrin (Ortrud), Tannhäuser (Venus), Die Walküre (Sieglinde); WIENER STAATSOPER: Ring der Nibelungen (Brünnhilde), Tristan und Isolde (Isolde), Parsifal (Kundry), Turandot (title part), Elektra (title part), Die Frau ohne Schatten (dyer); HAMBURGISCHE STAATSOPER: Tristan und Isolde (Isolde), Parsifal (Kundry), Elektra (title part); TOKYO: Tristan und Isolde (Isolde); ROYAL OPERA HOUSE COVENT GARDEN: Tristan und Isolde (Isolde), Lohengrin (Ortrud), Die Walküre (Sieglinde), Die Frau ohne Schatten (dyer); METROPOLITAN OPERA: Ring der Nibelungen (Brünnhilde), Elektra (title part), Die Frau ohne Schatten (dyer); DEUTSCHE OPER BERLIN: Ring der Nibelungen (Brünnhilde), Tristan und Isolde (Isolde), BAYERISCHE STAATSOPER: Ring der Nibelungen (Brünnhilde), Parsifal (Kundry), Elektra (title part).

The singer is furthermore greatly interested in modern operas, such as Wolfgang Rihm´s Hamletmaschine, in the premiere of which she sang the part of Ophelia.

In 1995, Gabriele Schnaut was appointed Kammersängerin at the HAMBURGISCHE STAATSOPER.

In 1997, the magazine “Die deutsche Bühne” celebrated her in Herbert Wernicke’s production of “Elektra” in Munich as the “only real singer-actress in the field of high drama of our time”.

In 1998, the magazine “Opernwelt” voted her Singer of the Year.

In the season of 2001-2002, the artist is going to perform in a new production of Die Frau ohne Schatten (dyer) at the METROPOLITAN OPERA, and can furthermore be seen in no less than two new productions of Ring der Nibelungen (Brünnhilde). On May 20, she is going to perform this role in Götterdämmerung at the OPERNHAUS ZÜRICH, and on June 30 in Die Walküre at the OPERA FESTIVAL MUNICH. In August 2002, Gabriele Schnaut can be heard in a new production of Turandot (title part), conducted by Valery Gergiev at the SALZBURG FESTIVAL (broadcast on TV).

Gabriele Schnaut has worked with important conductors such as Christian Thielemann, James Levine, Peter Schneider, Zubin Mehta, Franz Welser-Möst, Marcello Viotti, Fabio Luisi, Simon Rattle, Bernard Haitink, Giuseppe Sinopoli and directors such as Bob Wilson, Herbert Wernike, Günter Krämer, Jürgen Flimm and Robert Carsen.

She has furthermore built up a comprehensive song repertory, which stretches from Beethoven, Berg, Brahms, Mussorgski and Schubert to Strauss and Wolf.

Her CD recordings include her showpieces, such as the parts in Die Walküre (Brünnhilde) and Lohengrin (Ortrud), but she also has a keen interest in rarely performed operas such as Cardillac by Paul Hindemith or Der Schatzgräber by Franz Schrecker.
